Meta’s response to X (Formerly Twitter)?
What is “Threads”, the brand new social media platform linked to Instagram platforms? An app compared to X, built by Instagram to encourage text communications and community connection.
- Threads connects to Instagram, which is owned by Meta (aka Facebook). Threads is meant to be a more intimate closer group of followers, as they are hand-crafted lists of followers they want to view their stories and feed. Think along the lines of a close-friends list, but through Threads, it appears to be a whole feed page only seen by those selected to view it. It is up to the user to decide who can interact, reply, and discuss their posts (threads).
- “Threads” and the Conversations that Drive it: Threads is a messaging app focused on short, engaging communication. It features short text posts, as well as short videos and pictures. Users can share personal threads and also participate in public conversations. Threads provides a casual way for famous influencers to interact with their fans, seek their opinions, and have discussions on various topics.
- Where Threads can be accessed: Threads is available online and as an app that can be downloaded onto an iPhone or Android. This means that people can post both online and on their phones, making the app highly accessible even when a phone is not available.
- Can Threads be deleted? :The concept of a digital footprint (or tattoo) is widespread today, and this also holds true for Threads. When individuals respond to your posted Thread, the creator has the ability to delete the Thread entirely, while the replies will remain online and not be deleted. Once a thread is posted, the creator cannot alter who can see it. Once a post is made, there is little the poster can do to change the settings of that post and the accompanying replies.
- Staying Safe with Threads and Parent-Child Dialogue: Instagram has an entire page dedicated to safety guides for parents while their children utilize Instagram. Find that here: Tips for Parents | Instagram Help Center. Parents do not have access to their child’s account, due to privacy rules. Parents can choose to follow their accounts and see what may be posted (keep in mind, there are ways for children to remove followers, mute and hide content they post, etc). These rules translate to Threads specifically, because users are able to select who can see their posts/replies, as well as change who is able to mention you in posts, connecting that post to your profile.
