What Phone-Free Schools Leave Unfinished

Across the country, millions of students started this school year under tighter phone rules. New Jersey and New York now require bell-to-bell policies. Oregon’s ban took effect in January. California requires every district to limit phones. According to Education Week, at least 38 states and D.C. now require districts to ban or restrict phones in school.

I have pushed for clear school screen rules since 2018, when I urged my local school board to adopt consistent, enforceable guidelines. 

Kids get clearer expectations when the adults around them agree on the rules.

Rules give kids structure. Managing themselves without that structure takes practice, and the practice happens in small, ordinary moments at home.
